Nestled in Zambia’s Southern Province, the energy sector stands as a beacon of opportunity, driven by abundant natural resources and strategic initiatives. Hydropower remains the cornerstone of Zambia’s electricity generation, contributing approximately 85% to the national grid. The province boasts of being the country’s top producer of hydro power energy housing over 6 hydro power stations whose generation capacity is above 3000 Megawatts.
Southern Province is home to significant energy projects, including the 300 MW coal-fired power plant at Maamba, which supplies power to the national grid. Additionally, Zambia Sugar has been generating thermal power using biomass.
Recognizing the need for energy diversification, the province is embracing renewable energy projects. A notable initiative is the proposed 100 MW Cooma Solar Power Plant in Choma District, complemented by a 20 MWh battery energy storage system.
AREAS OF POTENTIAL INVESTMENT
Hydropower Development
Southern Province, Zambia, is a cornerstone of the nation’s hydroelectric power generation, hosting several key facilities that contribute significantly to the national grid. The Kariba North Bank Power Station, located on the Zambezi River, boasts an installed capacity of 1,080 MW, making it Zambia’s largest underground hydroelectric facility. Further enhancing the region’s energy profile, the Kafue Gorge Upper Power Station and the recently commissioned Kafue Gorge Lower Power Station offer capacities of 990 MW and 750 MW, respectively. Additionally, the Itezhi-Tezhi Hydroelectric Plant contributes 120 MW to the grid while the Victoria falls power station generates about 110 MW.
Despite these substantial installations, there remains considerable potential for expansion in Southern Province’s hydroelectric sector.
Solar Energy
- Utility-Scale Solar Farms: The region enjoys 5.0 to 6.0 kWh/m²/day of solar radiation, which is well-suited for the efficient generation of solar power. Development of large solar power plants to feed into the national grid.
- Off-Grid & Mini-Grid Solutions: Solar power for rural electrification, farms, and tourism lodges.
- Solar Water Pumps & Irrigation: Investment in solar-powered irrigation for agriculture.
Thermal Power Generation
The Province is home to Maamba Collieries Limited (MCL), Zambia’s largest coal mine, which fuels the 300 MW Maamba Coal-Fired Power Plant. This facility plays a crucial role in stabilizing the national grid, particularly during periods of low hydroelectric output. With extensive coal deposits in the region, there is room for further thermal expansion, ensuring energy security while complementing renewable sources.
Geo Thermal
Beneath the rolling landscapes of Southern Province, an untapped energy treasure lies waiting, geothermal power. With its natural hot springs and tectonic activity, the region holds immense potential for clean, baseload energy generation. Studies indicate promising geothermal activity in areas like Siavonga and Monze where underground heat could be harnessed for electricity generation. Unlike hydro and solar, geothermal provides 24/7 power, independent of weather fluctuations.
